Van Ness / Civic Center

Home to the Opera, Ballet, Symphony, and Asian Art Museum, Van Ness/Civic Center is an up-and-coming mixed commercial and residential neighborhood in the heart of San Francisco bordering Soma, Hayes Valley, Pacific Heights and Downtown San Francisco. At the crossroads of the city’s hottest neighborhoods, Van Ness/Civic Center is a prime destination for commuters and those looking for a convenient location in the center of the city, with its quick access north and south via the Van Ness corridor. The Civic Center itself serves as the seat of San Francisco’s local government, with a host of government buildings and the iconic City Hall building. It is also home to many of the city’s finest cultural institutions like the Orpheum and War Memorial Theater, as well as several historic structures and the city’s central library.

Van Ness Avenue begins in this neighborhood and runs continuously north through Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow, Russian Hill, and the Marina eventually reaching the bay. This main thoroughfare offers residents a variety of restaurants, entertainment venues, nightlife and movie theaters as a refreshing alternative to Civic Center’s historic venues.

In recent years, more and more new high-rise developments have sprung up along the Van Ness corridor, with the most recent additions to the neighborhood pushing the boundaries on size and scope of construction. Revitalization projects like 100 Van Ness and new construction projects like NEMA will both bring hundreds of new rentals to the area, while a steady stream of midrise projects plans to bring more luxury condominiums to the area over the next decade.
